A MUCH-needed getaway for the whole fam

We packed up the car and got the hell out of the heat this weekend. It was fabulous. We stayed at the condo in Pinetop and enjoyed the cooler days, the rain, the cold (yes, cold!) nights and the oh-so-wonderful feeling of not having to do anything.

We got some great shots of C this weekend and Brian posted them in the May folder to the right. There are some real gems in there.

Have I ever mentioned how hilarious Carolyn is? She's always doing something to make us laugh, but she was really on a roll this weekend. Maybe it was all the fresh air. Here are some highlights:

In the car on the drive up, a Pearl Jam song came on the iPod. We were chatting and not really paying much attention to the song, but Carolyn sure was. She did her best Eddie Vedder right there in the car for us. A very inspired string of Ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya in the same rhythm as the song, immediately following Eddie's rendition. We cracked up.

Carolyn perfected her new trick this weekend of sucking a small toy cup over her entire mouth and then waving her hands in the air and shaking her head from side to side, as if to say "Look! No hands, no hands!" Picture to prove it in the May folder.

Keeping C entertained in the car was a feat, for which I am going to take full credit. I kept a toy reserve in the front seat with me and would hand a new toy back to her at the very moment that the previous toy lost all its luster. However, the discarded toy was never simply handed back to Mommy. No, that would be way too easy and pet-friendly. Instead, she would fling it away from her ("Get this thing away from me right NOW!") and it would inevitably ricochet off of Sigmund's head before landing on the floor. The fact that she managed to make contact with the poor dog's head every time makes me think we might have a future pitcher or quarterback on our hands. At the very least, the girl's got aim (something she did NOT get from her Mommy). But poor Sigmund...

On Sunday afternoon, we went up to Hawley Lake to have dinner with Nana and Papa, who were camping there with the fly fishing club. Carolyn had taken a good nap beforehand and was in a brilliant mood! She had on her hat and sunglasses and couldn't stop laughing at everything. She enjoyed sniffing all the "flowers" (read weeds) at the lake and truly entertained and charmed everyone there. She also got a kick out of seeing her first kite. Every time it would fly up in the air she'd squeal with delight! It got pretty cold around dinner time, so we holed up in the trailer while Nana and Papa cooked dinner. Carolyn serenaded us with an endless chorus of toots the whole time. As if that wasn't funny enough, she'd crack herself up every time! She definitely got that from her Daddy.

And one more funny moment. When we got home today, Carolyn was reconnecting with her good friend Mater (a battery-powered ride-on toy in the likeness of Tow-Mater from the movie Cars). Mater has lots of buttons that play music, say letters and numbers, etc. when you push them. He also has an ignition button that you have to twist, and up until today C had never really figured out how to twist it and start the engine. Let me provide some needed context to this: when Carolyn was about 6 months old she loved to play in her exersaucer, which had a panel of buttons that played music when you pushed them. Brian would often sit there and push the same button over and over and over and over and over and over and over (get my drift?) again just because it made her laugh. Fast forward about 11 months, and it's clear that she picked up that trick from him. She must have "started" Mater at least 50 times (in the course of about one minute) this afternoon by turning the ignition switch over and over and over and over and over and over again. It sounded like poor Mater had engine trouble, or perhaps a dead battery, because all we heard was the sound of the engine turning over but never starting. I guess it's true what they say: kids are little sponges and pick up ANYTHING, even when they're just 6 months old. Brian is so proud...and mortified all at the same time. :-)

I hope you enjoy our fun pictures! We sure enjoyed our weekend together.
